Yesterday, a well packaged box containing Zagg’s latest ‘Invisible Shield’ screen protector for the iPhone 4 arrived in the post along with a note requesting us to kindly review it for our Techyzoners. So here we have the in depth review on the Invisible Shied for the iPhone 4.

At first glance, Zagg’s Invisible Shield looked just like any other screen protector, but soon after we fixed it on an iPhone 4 and began testing how well it could handle potential scratches we knew we had something far more durable and flexible than your average screen protector.

Zagg’s Invisible Shield is not made from ordinary plastic but instead uses plastic film that is so strong that it was once used to protect the blades of U.S military helicopters! The Invisible Shield also uses Nano technology, making it sort of like a smart film with self healing properties and an extremely high resistance to scratches. And if that were not enough, the shield is so easily flexible that it bends around corners and curves to take the shape of your phone or gadget, thus protecting all the surfaces that you want covered.

Available for £17.95 at Mobile Fun, this impressive little piece of military plastic is sure to protect your favourite iPhone 4 from scratches, smudges and smears.

Once it has been fitted, the shield is more-a-less invisible, check out the photos below for proof:

iPhone 4 Invisible Shield Features

So let’s have a run down of the iPhone 4 Invisible Shield features:

Colour: Transparent/ Clear

Warranty Type: Replacement

Warranty Validity: Lifetime of device

Material: Urethane plastic

Price: £17.95 (for iPhone 4 design)

Also included: Instruction booklet and adhesive

Technology: Nano-Memory for self healing properties

Coverage options: Full Body Maximum Coverage and Full Body Easy Install

Size: Available in multiple sizes and designs to fit different gadgets

Compatible with touch screen devices: Yes

What Makes the iPhone 4 Invisible Shield Better than Other Screen Protectors?

Currently, there are hundreds of clear screen protectors available on the market, but what makes the Invisible Shield stand out from all the rest is that it is made from Urethane Plastic and uses Nano Technology in its film.

Some of the other special features of Zagg’s Invisible Shield are as follows:

Material is scratch resistant

Does not mark device during application or removal

Fits the iPhone 4 perfectly

Can even be used for watches, laptops and gaming screens

Uses Nano-Memory technology and has self healing properties

Can be twisted to cover corners, sides and protrusions on a device

Package comes with instructions for application and adhesive

Rugged film protects device from high speed abrasion

Reduces smudges on device screen

So How Does Nano Technology in the Invisible Shield Work?

Nano memory technology has been used in the making of the Shield’s film creating a new texture to the device’s surface making it not just more scratch resistant but self healing.

Self healing: This gives the film the ability to recover soon after being exposed to abrasive substances making it last longer, allowing any device protected with the film to retain its shiny new look for life. Phones, cameras and laptops covered with the Invisible Shield will be safe from abrasions even at high speed.

Flexibility: The Nano memory technology also provides greater malleability to Zagg’s Invisible Shield making this military plastic film extremely flexibility. Users will be able to use the film to cover all part of their device from the front screen to the back panel, sides and top. Since the film is easy to bend to move, users will fin it very easy to fix onto their phones and gadgets.

Easier Grip: The combination of the Nano memory technology and the Urethane plastic makes it easier for one to grip the device and reduces chances of it slipping through your fingers and falling on the ground. The Invisible Shield can be extremely useful if you have a tendency to drop things and will be the ideal protection for your device.

What other devices can you use the Invisible Shield on?

Since the shield is made from military plastic, and has special memory technology, it is not advisable to cut your iPhone 4 Invisible Shield and shape it to fit a different phone or device. Furthermore, any alteration made to the film will cause the lifetime warranty provided by InvisibleSHIELD to become void. To avoid this Zagg has provided users with different designs of the Invisible Shield. You will be able to buy designs to fit most of the following gadgets including:

Camera displays

Mobile Phones

Laptops

Watches

Digital Media Players,

iPhones

Touch screen Phones

iPods

GPS Devices

Small Gaming Systems

What’s Special About Tech21’s d3o Leather Slip Case for the iPhone?

The secret of the Tech21’s d3o Leather Slip Case is in its padding. Users will find that the latest slip case from Tech21 is an extra-ordinary leather cover outfitted with built-in padding made of d3o gel, which is an intelligent substance capable of absorbing any shocks to the device.

How the D3o Gel Works

D3o gel is an extreme sports substance and is used by athletes and reputed sport brands all over the world. The use of it as a built-in protective padding for your iPhone cover will ensure that your device is safe from hard knocks and falls. The gel works in a very intelligent way and remains soft and flexible and easy to use until impact. Upon impact, the molecules in the soft gel adhere together turning into a hard substance to protect the iPhone from damage. This transformation occurs immediately upon impact and absorbs the shock to the device by turning the built in padding into a hard case in a matter of a second.

As of early 2009, though, thanks to Slingbox, which is produced by Echostar’s Sling Media division, users can watch television from anywhere they have an internet connection. This is particularly attractive to iPhone owners, who can get a signal on their phone from almost any location and stream high-quality television right to their cell phone.

Using Slingbox to watch Tv on Iphone

To stream live or recorded television on an iPhone, a user first needs to get a Slingbox. A Slingbox is a box-like device that connects to any television, whether it uses cable, satellite, DVR, etc., and transmits the TV signal over the internet to any Wi-Fi device. There are several models available including the Slingbox SOLO, Slingbox PRO, and Slingbox PRO-HD. All Slingbox models offer live streaming from any television, but only the Slingbox PRO-HD supplies high definition quality. However, when watching on a device like an iPhone, the need for HD seems overkill. Still, the PRO model does offer some advantages over the SOLO. For example, it has an extra tuner so that watching on the go will not interfere with a viewer watching the television at home. It also allows connection to multiple audio and video sources, which means you can connect to a television and DVR.

With a Slingbox installed, a user also needs to get the appropriate software to stream the video on their iPhone. This means downloading SlingPlayer Mobile’s iPhone version. The cost for this software is currently $29.99 and is available from the iPhone’s App Store. In addition to the software, the user needs to know the password for his or her specific Slingbox device as well as access to a Wi-Fi connection. This means that the Slingbox will not currently work over a 3G network alone, but it may at some point in the future.

Slingbox + Iphone = Complete Control

When everything is up and running users can do anything on their iPhone that they would normally do with their television and more. This includes changing channels, controlling DVR, and even fast-forwarding, rewinding, and pausing up to sixty minutes of live television.

Following initial setup costs, there are no monthly fees associated with using Slingbox on an iPhone. Plus, the same device can also be used with any internet connected PC, laptop, or even other mobile devices. This means more flexibility for users and an almost endless variety of places to watch television.

The Caribbean beckons with its sun scorched sands, crystal blue waters and a laid back pace of living. But you got to keep connected right? Any geek worth his bytes is going to be packing an iPhone.

Can you imagine that some people travel to the Caribbean without a GPS Mapping system and 802.11/g wireless connectivity?

Here is our guide to connectivity in the Caribbean:

How connected is the Caribbean?

As expected, internet penetration in the Caribbean is far below the world average. Just 17% of people of its 40 million strong population are internet users, which is unsurprising, considering the economic climate and inflated cost of internet servers in the region. But the good news is that telecommunications, although small, is one of the fastest growing industries in the Caribbean.

The iPhone itself is not yet available to buy in any Caribbean country, although Apple insist that it is “coming soon” to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

Can you get wi-fi anywhere?

Cuba (Yes we know, not technically the Caribbean but still a major resort!)

In Cuba, the answer is no. To get a flavour of Cuban telecommunications, take the two following strange but depressingly true facts:

1. April 2008: Two months ago, Raul Castro’s government finally allowed an ‘ordinary Cuban citizen’ to own a mobile phone, a luxury previously reserved for government officials and millionaire businessmen.

2. September 2006: The Cuban journalist Guillermo Farinas ended his 6-month hunger strike after being forced onto a drip for authorities. His protest for a ‘free internet’ failed, as did his organs.

It is rare for an ‘ordinary Cuban citizen’ to have internet access at home. With heavy policing of free speech on the internet, along with wildly inflated prices, you may struggle to put your iphone to use here. Internet is elusive and expensive. And the cherry on this cake is that power cuts are commonplace in Cuba.

However, do not despair – as tourism is a big industry in Cuba, the country does bend the rules of communism for us visitors. Havana airport, as well as Havana Cuba Hotel, Panorama Hotel, and various internet café’s in the capital offer wireless internet to tourists.

The cheapest hotel for wifi access that I could find is the Aparthotel Gaviota Montehabana located in Havana that offers 100 hours wifi access for 2.50CU (around $2.60 per hour.)

For a full list of every hotel that offers wifi access then please visit this page at Cuba hotel booking.

Elsewhere in the Caribbean:

Over in Jamaica, Barbados and the Dominican Republic, life, thankfully is taken a little less seriously. The sun will be shining, the birds will be singing, and you will be able to gloat to your friends in their sweaty city offices – direct from your iPhone. Since 2005, broadband is now available to all the Caribbean islands. Wireless is available in all airports, and many hotels and café’s in the Caribbean. A number of different companies also offer wifi access across a range of locations.

Jamaica

In Jamaica Tempest offer wifi access for $19.95 per day and Kingston Airport provides access from the British Airways Lounge.

Barbados

At Grantley Adams Int’l Airport in Barbados free wifi is offered to all passengers.

A list of all the hotels that advertise free wifi can be found at this Tripadvisor page.

You can also access a list of other areas where free-wifi is offered in Barbados here.

Bahamas

If you are planning to hit the Bahamas this year then check out free Wifi at Nassau International Airport via a company called Batelnet.

Antigua and Barbuda

In the departure lounge after you leave security at Antigua – V.C. Bird International Airport there is also free wifi.

Dominican Republic

In the Dominican Republic, Free-hotspot.com has compiled a list of places where you can acess wifi for free.

When sailing the seven seas

What about the days when you feel like taking your speed-boat out to sea for a spin, in true Roman Abramovich style? Abramovich himself demands wireless internet (among other things) on his boat trips and why shouldn’t you?

Two Main options: getting access to the Internet whilst sailing the seven seas.

One is the impressive but expensive Satellite option such as Moto Sat provided by Caribbetech.

The next more affordable option is to sign up for wifi access at your local marina and use a high gain external antenna to improve the signal enough to make it usable for your iPhone.

This page on hothothotspot.com details all the marinas in the Caribbean area that allow wifi access but do remember you have to pay for all of these. The hothothotspot package is good because with one subscription ($50 for one month), users can use any hotspot within their network. So you could sail from Falmouth harbour in Antigua and use the wifi spot within range of their until you get within range of prickly bay in Grenada and your iPhone would automatically log on to that network without any change in settings!

Hopefully this guide should help iPhone users… relax. You can have it all: sun, sea, sand and even the ability to check Digg.com.
