The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE is a netbook designed to provide an exceptional computing experience with ultimate portability. In this today’s post, we will review the Eee 1000HE, analysing it’s performance and portability.

Asus Eee 1000HE Technical Spec

The standard ASUS Eee PC 1000HE comes with Windows XP Home Edition as its operating system. It offers a 160G hard drive and runs on an Intel Atom 280 Processor with 1.66GHz. This processor boasts faster speeds than previous netbook models, making the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE an upgrade on past devices. Plus, its 1 gigabyte of memory allows for faster processing speeds as well.

Thanks to its ASUS Super Hybrid Engine with a 6 cell battery, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE can get up to 9.5 hours of battery life on a single charge. This is a vast improvement on past ASUS Eee models, which were criticized for their minimal battery life span.

With its Wi-Fi 802.11n, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE is able to connect to any available wireless network. Additionally, with its Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE can easily stream most simple web videos. However, like other netbooks, it is not designer for graphic intensive activities like gaming.

Asus Eee 1000HE Netbook Look and Feel

As for looks, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE comes in a sleek black casing with the option to add a special color case, most likely at an additional fee. With petite dimensions of just 10.5 inches by 7.5 inches, the netbook is exceptionally easy to carry around. It is also only 1.5 inches thick, and it only weighs 3.2 pounds. Inside this casing, the 10.2 inch monitor includes an LED backlight and the keyboard has been redesigned from past models to offer easier usage.

When it comes to customization, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE offers three USB ports to connect additional devices like a mouse, larger keyboard, external CD or DVD drive, mp3 player, etc. Plus, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE offers Bluetooth connectivity as well. There are also ports to add a microphone and / or headset. Other features include VGA output and a card reader that can handle SD, SDHC, Memory Stick, and MS-PRO. There is no need for an extra webcam connection, though, as the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE has one already built in.

Conclusion: Lots of Features, Small Price Tag

Ultimately, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE is not drastically different from previous ASUS netbook models. However, many of its features, as is mentioned above, are upgrades from past Eee options. With a price tag under $400 the ASUS Eee 1000HE is really affordable. Portability and performance for $400 – what more could you want?

The great thing about netbooks is the portability combined with the price. It's essentially the cheapest way to get a fully functional computer. They are certainly much better built than many laptops. At least the ones manufactured by ASUS and MSI are better built.

Dell’s entry into the netbook market, the Dell Mini 10, appears a little pricey at first blush.

The great thing about netbooks is the portability combined with the price. It’s essentially the cheapest way to get a fully functional computer. They are certainly much better built than many laptops. At least the ones manufactured by ASUS and MSI are better built.

Whether the Mini 10 is as sturdy is almost beside the point, because its regular price 630 dollars. That’s the regular price for the one with the larger 6 cell battery pack. A comparable MSI WIND cost less than 400 dollars.

Dell Mini 10 is an expensive netbook

Why would Dell even offer such a product in the netbook niche and then make it much more expensive than the alternatives? It’s tough to say. Not only is the regular price listed as 630 bucks but they’ll charge you 40 bucks more for one in a pretty non black or white version. Whether the extra charge for “designer” colors bears any resemblance to Dell’s infamous “Della” site for women doesn’t bear contemplating.

The Dell Mini 10 does offer to load Ubuntu Linux instead of A Microsoft OS and that’s at least kind of interesting. But choosing Linux it isn’t going to save you any money so you might as well buy an MSI Wind, which comes with Windows XP and then load your preferred Linux distribution on top of that. This will save you about 200 bucks.

Seriously though, why would Dell even want to make a netbook like the Mini 10? It doesn’t seem like a good business decision, because every time someone buys one they will realize how clunky the far more expensive laptops suddenly seem. In other words each sale of a netbook is also an advertisement against 90 percent of the merchandise Dell sells. So unless Dell is preparing to scale way back on the traditional laptops, it’s hard to see the wisdom in bringing out a netbook.

Maybe it’s worth it in some circumstances. I could imagine someone with a gift card who had to buy a Dell being happy with their decision. These netbooks are obviously assembly line products, so you don’t have to worry about having to experience the strange and perplexing moment when you open up your computer casing only to realize that it was designed a bit like new car which means if anything goes wrong you’re going have to send it back.

The Dell Mini-10 isn’t the best netbook available!

The Dell Mini-10 is the cyber equivalent of the high-maintenance date: attractive and expensive certainly, but in the long run, is it worth the money you spent on it?

I don’t know whether you ever get this feeling but there really does seem to be too many products that label themselves as something but on owning it, you think that in actual fact it really does not deserve that title.

The TechAir 3511 is a protective, secure and well-built netbook messenger bag. It is probably the best bag I have used for carrying my laptop, and it quite rightly deserves that title.

More than that, I think that this TechAir bag has been built with the right intentions, even including lifetime warranty. On a laptop bag, a lifetime warranty is quite the rarity and only present on the best quality goods – a very reassuring facet indeed! So, here’s the review…

3511 Netbook Messenger Bag Exterior

On the surface, the TechAir 3511 bag looks relatively understated with a plane grey-green and orange rounded corners made from toughened ripstop nylon. It’s a relatively stiff sort of nylon and immediately feels that is would be very protective of your netbook. I’m yet to test it in torrential rain but poured a glass of water over the sleeve to give it a quick test and the water ran right off. This proves water repellence but not survival of especially heavy rains – always at the top of your mind when in the UK!

Storage Compartments

Inside the TechAir notebook messenger bag there is plenty of storage available without being too bulky.

There’s the main protective laptop sleeve with a Velcro strap to keep your netbook in place, whilst other compartments provide ample space for a folder, pad of paper and a few netbook accessories (maybe a spare mouse, DVD drive or external hard drive).

The bag also has smaller pockets, handy for the odd item of stationary, ipod and mobile phone – I guess these bits you’d be more surprised if they weren’t included.

One of the suprising aspects of the Tech Air netbook bag is that it’s rigid pockets / netbook sleeve really help to organise the content. The rigidity of a bag hasn’t been something that I have thought about before but very pleased with this surprisingly helpful facet of what is essentially a protective feature.

So what makes the TechAir bag technology so special?

TechAir bags have a unique technology designed to protect the owner’s bag from impact damage. This is not just a hardened shield to your laptop but rather an inflated protective barrier that absorbs the shock rather trying to deflect it. The benefit here is that neither the immediate impact nor the subsequent shock the netbook will receive.
The most vulnerable places on a laptop are the outer edges are it looks like the TechAir netbook messenger bag has got this area nailed. Right around the outer edge there are

SO, dropping your bag is now OK! [To avoid law suits, please disregard that advice!!]

Track you lost TechAir bag with i-TRAK

Selected tech air bags include i-TRAK™, a unique world-wide tracking system. i-TRAK™ codes make your bag and your laptop totally unique and identifiable. Should you lose or forget them, i-TRAK™ enhances the chances of a speedy recovery. Registering your bag and laptop takes two minutes and I think that time well spent.

Your i-TRAK™ subscriptions are free with this netbook bag for the first year and are renewable at just £2.99 for each subsequent. As it looks like this bag can endure plenty more than a year’s worth of life being thrown at it, it’s likely that the £2.99 investment in protecting your bag and its contents is well worth it!

Conclusion

My default laptop bag, a Dakine laptop bag, is no longer my default bag of choice. The sophistication and range of features of the Tech Air 3511 netbook bag is certainly where my allegiance now lies. I can’t see how another netbook bag could hope to compete on this sort of quality without simply copying the features. Comparing it to the recently reviewed Cool Bananas Bullet Proof case, it’s obviously trying to serve quite a different market as each serves a different purpose. My advice: if you’re looking for a netbook bag that is lightweight, but highly secure and protective with the perfect surplus space for a pad of paper and a external DVD drive and even a few other bits and bobs, then the Tech Air 3511 is the one for you.

TechAir® Protection Technology

As the name suggests, TechAir® works with air technology. Simply put, your laptop is cushioned against bangs and drops by providing pressured-air resistance on impact.

Foam based protection provides poor redistribution of the impact and its quality deteriorates. With TechAir technology the shock is distributed away from the point of impact.

The MSI Wind is the perfect little netbook computer. Not a notebook or a laptop or a palmtop but a netbook. What is a netbook? It’s kind of like the style of computer that is actually portable as opposed to just movable. There may be some people out there who use laptops as portable computers but not many.

A laptop generally has no battery life. Sure, maybe in the beginning you might run it unplugged for a few minutes and think, “Gee this is OK,” but soon the batteries begin to shorten their life span and if you get an entire hour at a time you think that’s just great. And then there are all the peripherals. The laptop heat dispersal units, the PC-MIA card the portable hard drive, WiFi adapter… It’s just gotten to be a little excessive.

You can drop your MSI Wind without it breaking!

The MSI Wind on the other hand is a nice new netbook which built more like a unified piece than the rickety old laptops. They feel strong and you can even drop them without destroying them (But please don’t try to test this theory. Just sayin’.). It’s kind of like an old wireless phone compared to a new cellular phone in that the manufacturing process has come a long way.

Tech Specs of the MSI Wind

And you’re not stuck with some tiny useless hard drive. The drive in the MSI Wind can be up to 160 gigs. It’s got WiFi built in and it even comes with a video out so you can plug it into an extra monitor. It’s faster than most notebooks out there. It comes with a 1.6 GHz Atom processor and 1 gig of ram. (Strangely, you can add another gig of RAM on your own but it will void the warranty.)

MSI Wind are powerful and insanely portable

It easily runs all the same programs any laptop could, including MS Office and even Adobe Photoshop. It’s insanely portable. You can set it on the outstretched fingers of one hand and watch your favourite video while you’re walking around. All you have to do is flip the top up and you could use is in a bathroom stall or standing up in a subway.

Let the Wind release you to portable productivity!

If you’re one of those people who always wanted a laptop because of the freedom it promised, well your day has finally come with the netbook form factor. The MSI Wind is one of the highest rated examples of a netbook, and it’s less than 400 bucks for the one with the 6 cell battery (which is a must). The only thing you could possibly miss is a CD/DVD drive, but really, who uses those anymore?

With hundreds of notebook computers on the market, it can seem impossible to make the right choice. Ultimately, though, choosing a new notebook is a very personal decision. The precise model and features selected will reflect the needs and desires of the person using the new laptop.

One of the first things to consider is what the main purpose of the notebook will be. For example, if the user plans to play intense games on the laptop, it would be necessary to get a model with a lot of RAM, a dedicated graphics card, and a great monitor. Additional options like a built-in webcam or microphone might also be useful for a true gaming notebook. As a downside to this, though, a gamer would be looking to buy a notebook that is bulkier and heavier than other models.

As another alternative, someone who plans to use their notebook for portable business tasks would want a very different model. This user would probably not need as much RAM or even a particularly fast processor. However, he or she would be looking for a model that has a top of the line wireless card and possibly even 3G connectivity to access the web from anywhere. Long battery life is also an important consideration for those on the go, as is a small, portable size and light weight. Additionally, a notebook for business purposes needs to be secure. New features like fingerprint locking systems are great options as are security screens on the monitor.

Another common type of notebook user is the young adult student. Laptops are extremely prominent on college campuses and even among many teens. With these notebooks, one of the most important features is durability. These machines are going to take some abuse as they can often be tossed in backpacks or the victim of spills and crumbs. Bluetooth connectivity is also a great feature for these notebooks as young users often want to use wireless mice and instantly connect mp3 players or cellular phones. Additionally, young users often need a lot of hard drive space to store assignments, presentations, and, of course, music. With large music collections also comes a desire for a dedicated sound card and some great speaks. Finally, appearance can often matter more to a younger crowd, and sleek, colorful models are the most popular.

Ultimately, the best way to select a laptop is to start by making a list of the features you need. Then, compare among several models and check prices with several retailers. Remember, you can also get a customized model from the manufacturer, though this can cost more than pre-designed packages.

The Asus N10 netbook has been described as a “gaming netbook.” In other words, it is a small, portable computer with the ability to handle electronic games that are beyond the capabilities of other netbooks on the market. Essentially, the Asus N10 stands on the border between laptop and netbook, with more power than the average netbook but all the great portability features these small computers have to offer.

The Asus N10 is actually produced by the company’s laptop division, rather than its netbook department, which designs the Eee series of Asus netbooks. This model is somewhat larger than other netbooks. It has a 10.2” display with 1024 x 768 resolution and glossy coating. Still, the netbook weighs less than two pounds. The Asus N10 uses an Intel Atom N270 processor, which is what places it into the netbook category rather than designating the Asus N10 as simply a small laptop.

Dedicated graphics card makes Asus N10 a gaming netbook

One feature that sets the Asus N10 apart from other netbooks is its dedicated graphics card. Most net-books operate with only a basic Intel 945 integrated graphics chip. However, the Asus N10 also has an nVidia GeForce 9300M graphics chipset. To save power, the user can switch between the Intel and nVidia options with the flick of a switch. With the nVidia chipset enabled, the Asus N10 can play 3-D games that elude most net books. To further enhance a gamer’s experience, this net-book comes with up to 2G of DDR2 memory. It also has a SATA hard disk drive with the option of up to 320 GB of space.

Asus N10 comes with Windows Vista

With regards to some other features, the Asus N10 has some interesting capabilities. While most netbooks come with Windows XP Home, the Asus N10 has the option of operating on Windows Vista as well. Additionally, the Asus N10 comes with an optional built-in webcam and 1.3 megapixel camera. The netbook also has Bluetooth functionality and, of course, built-in wireless connectivity. Plus, the model comes with an external optical drive and, with the top model, a DVD player / burner. Finally, its six cell battery has quite the variable lifespan depending on what types of operations the Asus N10 is performing.

A pricey netbook that’s guaranteed to perform

Ultimately, the Asus N10 has a price tag ranging between $700 and $1,000 depending on the features selected. This is a little high for the average netbook, but, as you can see, the Asus N10 is not quite the typical netbook model.

With the popularity of netbook computers on the rise, Samsung has thrown its hat into the ring with the 10-inch, 1024 x 600-pixel, Samsung NC10. This sleek machine offers improved usability over other models and is a more comfortable design to help users transition to a smaller PC model.

Samsung NC10 Technical Specification

In terms of physical design, the full dimensions of the Samsung NC10 are 10.3 x 7.3 x 1.2 inches and it weighs less than 3 pounds. The netbook is commended for its keyboard, which is larger in size than most comparable netbook models and measures to 93% the size of a standard model. However, the larger keyboard does mean a somewhat smaller touchpad compared to other netbooks. Still, the touchpad has a responsive mouse click button and room for a dedicated scroll bar. Of course, a regular USB mouse can always be added in one of the netbook’s three USB ports. There is also a three-in-one memory card reader slot, audio input and output jacks, a VGA port, an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam and microphone, and, naturally, an Ethernet jack. Finally, the Samsung NC10’s sleek, professional casing design is available in either glossy white or navy blue.

Internally, the Samsung NC10 operates on a 1.6GHZ Intel Atom processor. It also has 1GB of RAM and a 120GB, 5,400 rpm hard drive, which has the option of upgrading to a 160GB model. Additionally, like many other netbooks, the Samsung NC10 runs on the Windows XP operating system. It also has a six-cell battery with a lifespan of 6+ hours. Sound quality on the netbook is also pretty remarkable for the small size, and reviewers note the Samsung NC10 has a loud, crisp, balanced audio output. However, this netbook, like many others, has only limited graphics capabilities. It operates with an integrated Intel 945GSE chip that uses 64MB of shared memory. While this is not enough to play intense 3-D games, the Samsung NC10 can provide quality video viewing. Finally, like all major netbooks, the Samsung NC10 has a 802.11b/g Wi-Fi card that provides a strong web connection.

The NC10 is one of the best Netbooks on the Market

Currently, the Samsung NC10’s top competitors are the Asus Eee PC 1000H, MSI Wind, and Lenovo Ideapad S10. However, many critics seem to see the Samsung model as the top choice for most users. It has a more comfortable keyboard, longer battery life, and stronger sound output than many other netbooks. Plus, it is available at quite a reasonable price, with the average cost being under $500.

The Asus Eee PC T91 netbook, set to launch in June 2009, is Asus’s first successful plunge into the world of touch screen netbooks.

The first Asus touch screen netbook

The Asus Eee PC T91 is actually a convertible netbook and tablet PC in one. The screen can swivel around and cover the netbook’s keyboard to transform into a touch screen tablet quickly and simply. The touch screen comes with a specialized stylus, but will work with just the touch of a finger.

Respectable performance for such a small netbook

With regards to the electronic specs, the Asus Eee PC T91 runs on Windows XP Home Edition. It also has an Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM. The processor is the low powered Z520 operating at 1.33 GHz, which means the Asus Eee PCT91 is kept cool and will not overheat. Although this seems to slow down the netbook, the Asus Eee PC T91 also comes with a powerful US15W chipset that helps improve the speed of the computer. The netbook also comes with a 32GB solid state hard drive, and the netbook’s touch screen offers a 1,024 x 600 resolution, which is average for netbooks.

As for its dimensions, the Asus Eee PC T91 features a rather petite 8.9 inch screen. The machine weights just 2 pounds and is roughly 1 inch thick. This makes it quite a bit smaller than many other netbooks on the market today. The exterior casing comes with a glossy finish, which may attract fingerprints quite easily, and is due to come out in a few colors beyond the typical black. The battery on the Asus Eee PC T91 is not removable like those on other netbooks. However, the battery does last roughly five hours on a single charge.

More than just a normal netbook: TV Tuner and GPS come as standard

There are also many extra features that can enhance users’ experience with the Asus Eee PC T91. For example, users can enjoy the use of an FM receiver, a TV tuner, and portable GPS capacity. There are also two USB slots to add additional hardware tools as well as two slots for media cards. These are compatible with SD, SDHC, and MMC cards.

Asus Eee T91 Video Review

A hefty price tag that is worth paying!

The Asus Eee PC T91 is great for almost any mobile operation. It can be a portable media player, a web browser, a word processor, and so much more. Ultimately, the Asus Eee PC T91 is looking at a retail price somewhere around $700. This puts it near the upper end of netbook pricing, but considering the extra features, it seems well worth the cost.
