Review of Casio Exilim EX-H10

August 11, 2009

In June, Casio unveiled its new Exilim EX-H10 ultra compact “Superzoom” camera. The 10x optical zoom allows close-ups with decent image quality, and its 24mm wide angle lens lets the user squeeze more into each shot, which is handy for shooting landscapes and wide rows of people. It’s also pocket-sized and has a long lasting battery that should last up to three times longer than that of its closest rivals. Casio advertises the capacity to take 1,000 photos with one fully-charged battery, allowing you to take over 100 shots per day for an entire week. That’s a vacation’s worth of pictures.

Exilim EX-H10 ultra compact The EX-H10 helps point and shoot users get the best shots with several photographic modes that are simple to use, such as Face Recognition, Make-up Shot, and Auto Best Shot. This camera, with its 10x optical and 4x digital zoom with over 12 megapixels combine to give you up to 40x zoom. Depending on the quality of the light, you can take pictures of far away objects without losing focus. A 10 frames-per-second burst mode for images of 1,280 x 960 pixels is a great feature, too.

Technical specifications of the Casio Exilim Ex-H10

The sensor in the EX-H10 is a 1/2.3” type charged coupled device (CCD) with 12.1 million effective pixels. It can take pictures in the following range of image sizes: 12M (4000 x 3000); 3:2 (4000 x 2656); 16:9 (4000 x 2240); 8M (3264 x 2448); 5M (2560 x 1920); 3M (2048 x 1536); and VGA (640 x 480). For still pictures, file formats include JPEG (Exif Version 2.2), DCF 1.0 standard, DPOF compliant.

Self-timer mode can be set at either 10 seconds or 2 seconds, and connectivity is provided by a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connector. The camera has 35.7 MB of internal memory power, and storage is in the form of SD memory cards. The rechargeable long life battery is a lithium ion battery, and without the battery the camera weighs 164 grams. Dimensions are 10.25 cm wide x 6.2 cm high x 2.43 cm deep.

The Casio Exilim Ex-H10 is an amazingly slim super-zoom camera

This is one of the most – if not the most – slim of all the superzoom cameras out there. With most compact point and shoot cameras offering only 4x zoom, this is a large step up for the pocket-sized point and shoot camera niche. Scheduled to go on sale in July 2009, the EXILIM EX-H10 should retail for about $300. It won’t be the cheapest tiny camera, but it has many cool features that most tiny cameras don’t have.
