LaCie has always been a hardware company dedicated to style. Their line of Porsche-designed hard drives were very well made and nice looking. The USB LaCie key products bring that style consciousness to the next generation of storage product.
What we are seeing here is the disappearance of the CD-Rom drive as a storage device. It will be replaced by small plug-in USB drives. The LaCie "Key" concept makes the USB drive look and store just like a key. This was a brilliant Idea, as suddenly a key ring starts to replace all those boxes of CD and DVDs.
They are much easier to use, as you don’t need a burner and then a separate recording media it’s all in one. Currently it comes in sizes that would store between 5 and 10 CDs worth of data. A key ring of those would certainly replace a lot of CD clutter. It will also keep it safer as you can’t scratch a USB drive. This may also lead people to secure their USB ports, because it’s easy to imagine some hacker plugging their USB drive into your computer.
Another newer and more exciting use of the USB drive is as a storage site for an operating system. This would allow you to run any computer using your own operating system. Perhaps all software will soon be sold on non-erasable USB drives. I know that would benefit people like me whose collection of CDs is vast and spread all over with plenty of data impeding scratches.
I can just see Microsoft selling Office on a USB key drive. Perhaps the new Windows Seven can be loaded on a USB drive. I have seen portable versions of various applications including Photoshop that can easily be loaded and run from a USB drive.
Imagine the utility and resource saving this concept has. If one went to school with an e-book reader and a USB drive, one could carry all their textbooks around with them and make save all their school work. A lot of printers now accept USB drive plug-ins so you could easily ditch the cord.
The point is, what make a computer seem like your computer isn’t the hardware but the software, and if all your personal settings could be stored on a USB drive along with the programs and operating system then you could stop thinking of your computer as a piece of hardware and you could just use almost any computer that runs as your personal computer.
